Health tips for IT professionals!

Dr. Anupa focuses on the health problems being faced by IT professionals. Read all the articles here.
The last few days all the newspapers have been featuring items on the importance of corporate health - especially the IT/BPO sector – consequences of stress related disorders on the body and health in the long run. I happened to go through them and I felt that there were few underlying problems that were surfacing. These were common in nature but were portrayed differently. IT people, whom I regularly meet, have been asking me questions on how to handle back aches, wrist pains, CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome), neck and shoulder pains. Both of these issues are pertaining to the same problems arising out of extended working hours, multiple night shifts, wrong eating habits and high pressure jobs. Let us understand how to identify these symptoms at the earliest before they end up as disorders and also what to do for them?
Identifying these symptoms:
* Difficulty in waking up at a particular time – snoozing the alarm continuously
* Feeling fatigued while waking up itself
* Not having an appetite in the morning or when you wake up
* A sensation of acidity or ulcer when you wake up
* Tendency to have stiffness in the body when you wake up
* Nagging aches and pains in some parts of the body
* Frequent head aches
* Having a quick temper and becoming very intolerant
* Feeling like eating small snacks intermittently rather than having sumptuous meals
* Increasing weight in a short period
* Feeling of boredom and emptiness
* Difficulty in falling asleep
Some of these symptoms when identified by us will be the signals that our body is giving us. There can be even other things which are abnormal that we face, that we should take notice of. The moment we identify these we have to start working on the same. I will also put down some things that we as corporates can start doing immediately.
1. Become aware about the signals of the body and pay heed to them
2. Start doing basic exercises regularly for at least 15 minutes
3. Always ensure that you learn to leave work at office itself
4. Do not spend the available free time fiddling with the TV remote
5. Practice a hobby of yours regularly
6. Learn stretches that have to be done in the work place
7. Eat a light dinner at any cost, this will ensure that you can have a proper breakfast
8. Go for a post dinner stroll
9. Learn abdomen exercises as that is the area where fat starts accumulating first and fast
10. Avoid snacking when you are bored
11. Those of you work with the computer for more than 8 hours learn eye exercises
12. Practice cupping of the eyes at regular intervals as it will relax the eye muscles
13. Drink plenty of water daily – 2-3 litres minimum
14. Have a warm water bath before going to sleep, this will stimulate you to have a restful sleep
Once we start practicing even few of these we will start seeing benefits and we will be able to lead better lives. Next week I will write on specifics for night shift executives.
